Winderong Farm is an experimental project encompassing permaculture, regenerative agriculture, bush regeneration, sustainability and communal living. Our farm is set on 810 acres of stunning wilderness and farmland in beautiful Dharawal country, Kangaroo Valley. Our growing community consists of around 12-15 full-time residents, as well as local employees and a host of beautiful and much-loved farm animals and wildlife. We aim to embody the permaculture principle of “we are nature working” and develop a deep understanding and respect for the land we steward, all the while aiming to regenerate the earth and learn from her and each other.

A little about Winderong

Winderong Farm is set in Dharawal Country. Winderong is Dharawal for Red Cedar and the farm is home to some beautiful Winderong trees. It is bordered on 3 sides by Budderoo National Park. There is a pristine, energising creek running through the centre of it, with numerous large swimming holes. The water which feeds us, our animals and our gardens comes from a spring-fed waterfall in the forest.
Animals that call the farm home include beef and dairy cattle, chickens, turkeys, and bees (and lots of wombats and kangaroos!). We also have a large veggie garden, an orchard, herb garden, food forest, animal fodder and grain crop areas.

"The experience of living and working at Winderong Farm can’t be put into words. Frosty mornings working in the garden as the early rays warm your back, planting seeds and looking after them until you see them grow tall, picking the first juicy tomato of the summer season which you've been waiting for all year, identifying unique native orchids clinging to mossy tree stems, standing in awe under age old trees and remembering how small you really are. These are only some of the special moments which come to mind when I think about my Growing internship at Winderong Farm. The wide spectrum of projects going on at the farm have enabled me to delve into areas of interest: for me that has been understanding biodiverse food production systems, bushland regeneration and conservation within an agricultural context. I was well supported in learning and work through sharing of resources, guidance by knowledgeable mentors and practical learning by doing. Sharing the knowledge I have gained and teaching others about growing food and better looking after our ecosystems has added great meaning to my experience at Winderong. Whilst living in the same place that you work may not be for everyone, for me, it has enabled me to deepen my knowledge on growing food and living closely withing the ecosystems that we are part of. After all, we are nature, working! I would recommend anyone interested in growing and eating food in a community living context to apply."

"I've had the pleasure of spending 8-months here at Winderong Farm, and oh boy, has it been my best adventure yet. My food preparation and preservation internship has been an opportunity of endless learning and has exponentially expanded my skill levels. I've learnt the art of fermenting, canning, preserving, cheese-making, harvesting, organic gardening, seed-saving, herbal medicine making, foraging, bee-keeping, cow milking and the list goes on. My creative capacity has expanded beyond what I ever thought was possible. I have learnt to trust my intuition in the kitchen and use all of my senses in the creation process. I have loved attending workshops and working-bees for more broader community members organised by the farm. Being a part of this web of giving and receiving has been a big realisation of the true meaning of heart-centred living. Community life on the farm has been one of my biggest teachers during my stay and has been a divine test of resilience and responsibility. Stepping up to my roles and duties within the farm gave me a sense of belonging while enhancing my independence. I feel a big transformation in the way I show up and hold myself. I can't forget to mention how homely I have felt amongst this beautiful community. Their safe and supportive presence has been the catalyst to my beaming authentic self-expression. Upon reflection as I leave, I have never felt more empowered in my identity and my actions than now. Seeds of beautiful change have been planted in my heart and I cannot wait to spread these seeds into the hearts of others. With every ounce of my being, thank you Winderong Farm and the whole community who makes this place so special and transformative."

"My Animal Care internship at Winderong has not only allowed me to engage in meaningful work but also participate in a lifestyle that aligns closely with my values reflective of personal intentions and beliefs. Living and working at Winderong has allowed me to actively practice a regenerative lifestyle that understands the ideas around us being part of nature and not separate from our environments. The internship itself is built with foundations of support that encourage autonomy and constant room for growth and experimentation. Being part of a community that understands education and wellbeing go hand in hand has been a truly inspirational atmosphere to be a part of. My work in the animal team has been not only fulfilling but completely immersive in terms of the thought and level of care that Winderong allows you to carry out for every animal we interact with, whether it be native or one of our own. Winderong's ability to showcase the interconnectedness between farm systems gives a great representation of how healthy food systems and creating resilient landscapes are a natural relationship that we can be a meaningful and positive part of."
